Autos that are referred to as salvage are usually a good source of spare parts. This is especially true for older vehicles where the stocks of new parts are depleted or dried up altogether. But the term salvage can be misused in some instances when other terms such as repairable or rebuildable would be more appropriate. Salvage is most appropriate for vehicles that are only good for breaking down into usable spare parts.
Of course if you buy a whole vehicle for spares it may cost you less than the sum of any individual parts but the catch is you are then left to dispose of the unwanted junk that is left over. Secondly you have to strip down the parts you require yourself. This may be alright for the more experienced mechanic but the novice may be better just sourcing the stripped parts alone.
When considering using salvage parts for you Jeep there are a few points to consider. The first and foremost point is to assess if the part required is a safety critical part. If so you would be very careful about using a second-hand spare part in that instance. Of course if no other alternative were available then close inspection and testing of the replacement part would vital.
Another major point to consider; is the labor cost involved in replacing the part much more than the cost of the part itself. If so it would make more sense to fit a guaranteed genuine replacement part as any failure of the part itself could cost you big time in doing the same job twice. Consider also, if a car has been wrecked in an accident then many parts may have been stressed and so care would be needed in selecting parts from that vehicle.
When assessing whether to use salvage parts you need to factor in the extra costs in time and travelling to pick up and remove the spare parts. You can however source your parts from one of the many junkyards that pre-strip and clean up the spares ready for you to buy.
With such a long history of making Jeeps there are a vast wealth of vehicle already in breakers yards and many are added to this each year. This does give the Jeep owner a ideal pool of resources to make sure your old Jeep keeps on going.
